As the clear air of autumn settles in, we begin to feel the season slowly deepening. This October, we are pleased to present an exhibition featuring glass artists Hiroyuki and Nozomi Kobayashi, together with metal artist Hana Okuzawa.

We have titled this exhibition “Autumn Light, Fragrance of Tea” (秋光茶香), inspired by the image of the quiet fragrance of tea rising into the autumn light. There is an expression, “spring water, autumn fragrance” (春水秋香), which evokes the changing pleasures of tea with the seasons—the fresh clarity of tea in spring, and its rich fragrance in autumn.

The glassworks of Hiroyuki and Nozomi Kobayashi reveal the color of tea with a simple, natural beauty. The distinctive texture created through mold-blowing lends the color a soft, luminous depth. As though the finely textured surface itself were holding the fragrance of the tea, a gentle impression lingers even after the last sip.

Hana Okuzawa’s metalworks carry subtle expression within simple, minimal forms. Their finely hammered surfaces catch the light, creating quiet patterns of light and shadow. With use and the passage of time, the metal gradually takes on a softer, more subdued tone, deepening the character and presence of each piece.

This will be the first exhibition bringing these two practices together since the spring five years ago. In the light and air of autumn, so different from that earlier season, we hope you will enjoy the landscapes and impressions that emerge through glass and metal.

During his student years, Taro Yoshita encountered the captivating possibilities of ceramics—the unexpected expressions that emerge from the interplay of clay, glaze, and fire. This was a form of ceramic expression quite different from the traditional Kutani overglaze painting practiced by his family, and the experience came as a profound revelation to him. Driven by this impulse, he immersed himself in the study of glazes, an exploration that became the starting point of his ceramic practice and continues to shape his work today.

Through making and testing an enormous number of glazes and repeating a process of trial and error, Yoshita eventually arrived at a select few that truly resonated with him. He continues to study them closely, exploring their expressions and textures while searching for new possibilities within them.

For Yoshita, glaze is not simply a means of adding color or decoration to an object. Rather, the expressions and textures created by the glaze become the starting point from which the form and design of each work emerge. His sculptural pieces are characterized by smooth, silky surfaces and finely textured white glazes that create a sense of depth and dimension. In response to these delicate surfaces, soft and graceful curves emerge naturally, becoming another defining quality of his work. More than vessels intended simply to hold flowers, his pieces can also be appreciated as sculptural works in their own right, inviting us to take in their presence and tactile qualities.

As Yoshita continues to deepen his explorations and move toward new forms of expression, we invite you to experience his work as it is today in person at the exhibition.

Tanaka creates his work using a hand-building technique known as tamazukuri, in which clay is gradually shaped by pressing and expanding it with the hands. The soft forms that retain traces of the maker’s touch are among the distinctive qualities of this method. The newly developed teapot featured on our exhibition announcement was also created using this technique. We hope you will be drawn to its gentle contours and quietly organic presence.

After studying ceramics at university, Tanaka apprenticed under Masanobu Ando at Gallery Momogusa. He now works independently in Nakatsugawa. While white remains central to his practice, he continues to pursue new expressions and possibilities within his work. This exhibition offers an opportunity to experience that ongoing evolution.

Living amidst the rich natural surroundings of his home, Tanaka carefully translates the impressions and observations of daily life into his work. We also invite you to take note of the forms themselves, where elements reminiscent of both Western and Eastern antiques blend together with remarkable ease and naturalness.

Takuji Hayashi was born and raised in Seto, one of Japan’s historic pottery towns, in a family that operated a ceramics business. Surrounded by pottery from an early age, there were times when he distanced himself from ceramics, perhaps out of a sense of resistance, yet he was naturally influenced by the culture of Seto and by ceramics from earlier eras.

He has long been drawn to old Seto wares, Ofuke-yaki, and even Southern Song celadon, as well as antique ceramics from beyond Japan. Many of his works are inspired by the imagery and atmosphere of these historical pieces. While carrying the charm and spirit of old wares, his vessels also possess a refined freshness and clean simplicity. They blend naturally into contemporary living and quietly accompany the everyday table.

Alongside his signature crackled glaze pieces and black-glazed works, this exhibition will also feature vessels made with a decorative clay blended with red earth taken from the mountain behind his home. These pieces, also featured in the exhibition announcement, have a texture reminiscent of unglazed yakishime ware.

Hayashi’s vessels carry a quiet depth while remaining familiar and approachable in daily life. We warmly invite you to visit and experience them in person.
