Takuji Hayashi was born and raised in Seto, one of Japan’s historic pottery towns, in a family that operated a ceramics business. Surrounded by pottery from an early age, there were times when he distanced himself from ceramics, perhaps out of a sense of resistance, yet he was naturally influenced by the culture of Seto and by ceramics from earlier eras.

He has long been drawn to old Seto wares, Ofuke-yaki, and even Southern Song celadon, as well as antique ceramics from beyond Japan. Many of his works are inspired by the imagery and atmosphere of these historical pieces. While carrying the charm and spirit of old wares, his vessels also possess a refined freshness and clean simplicity. They blend naturally into contemporary living and quietly accompany the everyday table.

Alongside his signature crackled glaze pieces and black-glazed works, this exhibition will also feature vessels made with a decorative clay blended with red earth taken from the mountain behind his home. These pieces, also featured in the exhibition announcement, have a texture reminiscent of unglazed yakishime ware.

Hayashi’s vessels carry a quiet depth while remaining familiar and approachable in daily life. We warmly invite you to visit and experience them in person.
